The purpose of this project was to identify areas of highest avalanche risk in ski resorts throughout Utah. For Snowbird and Alta, I found that areas with the highest risk generally lie on the outskirts of the ski resorts and at higher altitudes. When referring to the ski run maps, we find that many black diamond runs intersect these avalanche areas, along with a couple of the bigger ski lifts. Avalanches in theses areas could potentially jeopardize the integrity of the lift and the safety of black diamond skiiers.
I created a model that used a 30m DEM to cacluate slope, altitude, and aspect, reclassifying values based on information obtained fromt he Sawtooth National Forest Avalanche website.
In my free time I'm working on modifying this model to show me avalanche risk in Provo Canyon. This area has a history of large avalanches. As a frequent hiker in the area, I'm curious about the avalanche risk, specifically around Bridal Veil Falls.
Adding a parameter to account for snow depth or average snowfall in the area may help refine the model and give us more accurate results.
